Post has monitored the Mets draft the whole time and noticed a trend. One was the don't reach for possible "breakout" players. The main reason is you flop more then breakout. Staying steady and only reaching when you have the luxury too was key. The Mets reached on one player only. That was round 7 pick of Josh Willingham. To them Willingham is of age so they felt it wasn't much of a risk. He has had scouts compare to him as a new Mike Piazza. We also learned that SVP Reynolds is debating on putting a 3 year on him. The only way they don't is if he busts in Spring Training. Round 6 the Mets "stole" Reggie Sanders. Yes he is injury prone but when he is healthy his is a #2 or #3 type OF. Decent BA, Power and Speed. Still has an up of 20/20. At round 6 there is no possible loss. Round 7 was the risky pick of Willingham. They were looking at either Duchscherer or Cabrera but since they were gone nothing after excited them. Round 8 they traded that pick for more middle round picks with the late Broskey. Who was removed from office after some shaddy offers. Round 9 we took Hawkins to secure the Baltimore closer/setup man. Solid guy with decent 's. Round 10 they took Adam Kennedy a decent backup for Roberts who is questionable to start year. Won't lose much starting him. Just a few HR's. 20SB speed and 300BA. 2nd pick in round 10 we took stable Silva. Nothing great solid control pitcher with a decent ERA/WHIP. Nice 6th SP. Round 11 we had Brewers pick and ours. With the Brewers we took JJ Hardy. Breakout candidate after his solid 2nd half showing a 300+ BA and 9HR's. Upside of 280 and 16+HR's. Nice SS IMO. Will be a very good backup to Guillen who is also prone. 2nd pick in round 11 Mets took Shannon Stewart. Another not so flashy guy but he is a leadoff hitter. If I need a week with more runs he is the guy. Round 12 Mets took Salomon Torres. Another setup man for Mike Gonzalez. 2nd pick in round 12 they took much passed on Rodringo Lopez. They did not want him but this spot there is absolutely ZERO risk. Round 13 and their 2nd last pick they took Justin Speier. Once again setup man for their closer. Security for all 3 now.. Solid guy with under 3ERA and less then a 1.00WHIP. Finished really strong last year.
So to summarize The Mets had probably one of the best drafts in the league. Stayed steady without reaching too much. Have solid depth at EVERY POSITION. Something that will come in need during a LONG season. Word has it Harden and Willingham will get 3's and 2's for Smoltz and Giambi. Then we will extend 2 at end of the year.. Mets will be setup again next year.
